Insert____Here

Friday, June 27, 2008

Sorry blogfiends, there’s not gonna be a Portrait of the Week this week. I’m moving, and my hurried attempts at Tina Fey are so far no good.

In other drawing news, this is my contribution to a project by Eve Mosher called Insert____Here. The idea is, people see something that could improve the sustainability of their area, tag it with a sign that says what should be inserted, and then somebody visualizes it with a drawing over the image. Fun project! Good idea! Mine’s a bioswale, meaning a natural water filtration system, like a marsh.

Talk About Your Gilded Lily

Thursday, June 19, 2008

I’m glad to say my favorite Top Chef Chicago won. She’s wonderful and she’s the hometown hero, with a delightful Chicago accent. Does anybody else think that people from the Midwest talk the way they do because they’re always cheesing? I think there might actually be something slightly insidious about all those hard R’s, gleeful E’s, and enthusiastic A’s… What are Midwesterners hiding from us???

Always-comin-through Jen May curated a group show that’s hanging in her apartment hallway Little Omar’s Gallery, and it’s all about roses!! My contribution is called “By Any Other Name” and it’s all about Gertrude Stein!!! And gold, no less!!!! Exclamation!!!!!

Portrait of the Week: Hillary Clinton

Monday, June 16, 2008

Finally, the Portrait of the Week for last week. There’s another one coming for the end of this week, so don’t fret.

I’ll tell ya, back in January I really loathed both of the Clintons. But now, after Ms. Clinton’s suspension speech, I’ve got nothing but love. If the drawing seems overly heroic, just wait until I do Barack.

Songs About Rainbows

This heat wave is serious business. The PATH train is catching fire, the G train is suspending service. The breeze feels like sticking your head in an oven to check on the pizza. Basically, I’ve been coping by sitting around in my underwear all morning. Somehow, around noon I feel the urge to work on something. Wellll, that something is quite often a little frog with a beautiful rainbow.

Yes, loyal bloggers, the famous frog is reaching a point of completion. I’m just not sure if I’m going to go with the gray fill that appeared previously or not. Probably yes.

Portrait of the Week: Harold Ramis

Friday, June 6, 2008

I’m moving this blog to WordPress sometime this month [By month I meant year, OK? -Procrastinator Pat], and I’m excited for it. I hope you are too, dear reader.

This came out a little bit caricature-y, and I guess that has something to do with sticking his head on another body. But, the man is a Buddhist, and he has taken on some of the physical characteristics of that great Zen monk Budai, the Laughing Buddha. What can I say?

Here Comes the Sun

The portraits project is forging ahead, and I realized I missed a pretty good moment to do an Obama piece this week, but oh well, such is life. Harold Ramis will soon be gracing this blog, despite his not being in the news, or having a new project coming soon, or anything. I just like him, okay?

Here’s what else, cold-brewed coffee is really good. I read about it in a Times article last summer, and now I’ve done it twice. My coffee pot couldn’t have cracked at a more opportune time than this very summery early June.

Following are some pretty recent on-the-street and in-the-cafe sketches.
