All my blog friends have been blogging awesome/hilarious stuff and I haven’t been reading it! Even Devon returned from nowhere. Sorry Devon, I don’t think you’re awesome or hilarious. jaykaying, oh my g! So now I’m writing too.
Here’s the deal. Basically I’ve just been drawing portraits of BFFs lately. One for what’s become the defunct-est artists’ community/blog I’ve ever seen, and the other for, of all places, Slate!
A couple weekends ago Jen played me this song. It roolz. Love the weird operatic soprano.
Well guys, it’s been a couple of exciting weeks since last I wrote on here. For one, there was the MoCCA, where I met a new friend/enemy, Karl Stevens. For two, I’ve got a summer illustration job working on something that involves both computers and fishing, which means that, for three, I’ve been fishing and hauled in a big bass. I’ve also made many excursions to Connecticut for said job, and I’ve gotta say, I don’t think anything could ever stop me loving Metro-North trains. It’s the only way to travel.
Oy. Did I let another week slip by without posting anything? What kind of blog is this, anyhow? Lots has been going on. Buddy Colin and I are exquisite corpsing a comic for our table at MoCCA Fest (which is coming right up on June 6th, by the by). Oy vey ismir! Did I just say June 6th? I’ve got to print up my comics before then! To back up a thought, going back and forth on a comic is so much fun. I’d love to get a group of us passing things around in a circle some day and making up hilarious stories.
What else, what else? I sent in my application for cartoon school this past Saturday. But oy gevalt, I think I’ll have to wait a year even if they’re begging for me to come. Du-udes! I need to get some scholarships! They don’t have federal accreditation yet, so I’ll have to put the whole tuition on a private loan. I’ve got to try to lessen the burden a bit, nais pas? In the meantime I’m hoping to get laid off and live off the social safety net for a while – omg, jaykaying!…sort of. Odds are looking up since the copier is empty after 8:00 every night.
Whoah! Brand new super-fun website! It’s a big group of artists/friends working in every medium there is. Every week one contributor assigns a theme and then everybody responds to it. This is probably the best thing on the internet. My first post is the Inpiratomatic. Check-ch-check check, check it out!
Okay bloggers, real talk. I haven’t posted in a while, which makes me sad. I’m continuing to make glacial progress on my website overhaul, which makes me happy in a bittersweet kind of way. I haven’t even posted a celebrity for either of the last two Saturdays. Do I chalk this up as a blog vacation, or do I quit on the whole celebrities thing, and develop more drawings in the nakedness/supernatural/imp vein? I have been doing some more loose-limbed sketchbook doodling lately.
Let me tell you, it’s hard to figure out where one fits in the ever-shrinking editorial illustration world. It’s also hard to figure out the appropriate tone for a public blog. When I launch at PatBarrett.com, I’m going to include the sketchblog as a sub-site. How much of this sort of desperate, searching, I’m so in my mid twenties business should be allowed to continue? How should I link to you, my readers and fellow bloggers? Where do I leave the Live Journal world behind? Ay ay ay.
This drawing is inspired by Dr. Seuss wartime political cartoons. I’ll post some in a follow-up.
If only I lived in Canada, and I could pull down a sweet salary, health benefits, and pension for sitting at my drafting table, you know? I mean, I’ve been a good boy and done my work! Doesn’t that mean I should be making so much money?
I couldn’t resist posting this one last Met drawing. The museum closed before I “finished,” but I think it actually helped me not take the detail bidness too far. As they always said in foundation, work the whole page, so the drawing can be complete at any moment. I guess I’m not paying those student loans for nothing. OK, now I’ll shut up about money and post a picture:
I’m starting a new blogject, folks! One portrait weekly on these pages. If I make any decent drawings in the series, they might even make into my actual portfolio. Isn’t that just so exciting?
Now, we can’t all expect this blog-drawing gain without some sort of blog-drawing loss, can we? Faithful readers may be relieved to know the images below represent the last of the weekday drawing adventures while the other half of the expeditionary team returns to work animating kids’ shows. However, there is some talk in certain circles about forming a weekend adventure committee.
Last Friday, McCool called me up and said we should go to Philly for our drawing adventure this week. It was fun, but after we took the Chinatown bus, got Tastykakes at Wawa, stopped for seriously beyond-street food falafel from a man in a Gypsy cart, walked by the awesome Philadelphia City Hall in the rain, and paid the $500 entrance fee at the Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities, it was already, like, 3:30. Weird, right? So, I only drew these two pages before they closed.
This week, oh buddy, ol’ pal o’ mine Dan and I went to the Museum of Natural History. We looked at Teddy Roosevelt’s horse’s balls, and drew cartoony animals. We both felt very proud of ourselves when the day ended, and we’re intent on going on more drawing adventures. It’s like art school again, but without the stress! Also, I finished my sketchbook, so look out for a different page shape popping up soon. Very exciting, I know.
